Tiemar Tegene is an active and dynamic Ethiopian artist who puts her emotions and experiences onto a canvas. Using etching processes in her prints, each one of her pieces reflects fleeting moments in intense detail.
To showcase the artist’s memory and artwork, an art book is needed to commemorate her journey from her early beginnings to her current routines. Along with an e-book interface, the publication must highlight Tegene’s work and story.
Highlighting Tegene’s works is one of the most important aspects of this project. Given the intense detail in every piece, the layout has to be simple and direct to emphasize the variety of works she has done. Therefore, the ideal situation for the book’s design must have contrasting elements that do not overtake the artwork but let the book retain its character.
Starting with the cover, one of her iconic pieces takes up the front cover and leaves the spine and back black. This adds the element of contrast needed to introduce the work that Tegene has created. The whole publication uses a direct grid system that would distinguish the intense detail in her artworks. A black-and-white colour scheme (minus the photos) mimics the contrasting elements in her works, comprising a minimalistic colour scheme. To give the text personality, a sans-serif typeface was used featuring subtle geometric features and rounded bowls and tittles that differentiate it from the artwork.
